Are Signal Providers Worth It?

The economic case for paying for signals

A trading signal is a decision. If you can acquire a better decision than you would make alone, and the cost of acquiring it is less than the edge it provides on your capital, paying for signals makes economic sense. That is the full case in one sentence.

The difficulty is in verifying whether you are actually acquiring a better decision. Most signal services cannot demonstrate verified historical performance. If you cannot verify that a provider's past signals were profitable before committing capital, you are paying for marketing claims.

When signal services are worth it

The conditions that must be true:

• Verified performance: The provider has an independently audited track record covering at least two years, including drawdown and Sharpe ratio, not just a headline return.
• Subscription cost proportional to capital: At $50 per month, a signal service needs to generate meaningful improvement on a minimum account size that makes the cost negligible as a percentage of capital.
• Executable signals: You need to be able to enter and exit at prices close to what the provider publishes. Signals with tight entry windows on illiquid instruments may be theoretically profitable but practically unexecutable at the stated prices.
• Methodology you understand: If you do not understand what generates a signal, you cannot assess when conditions have changed and the methodology may no longer apply.

When signal services are not worth it

• The provider's track record is self-reported and unverified by any independent party.
• Your account size is small enough that the subscription cost is a significant percentage of capital — you would need to generate returns above a higher hurdle just to break even on the subscription.
• You cannot execute signals in time because of timezone, work hours, or platform access.
• You plan to cherry-pick signals rather than following the provider's complete system including grade tiers. Selective execution removes the statistical properties that produced the stated performance.

The grade-tier point

Services with conviction grades publish separate performance data per grade tier. A Grade A Swing Trade signal in the Vector Ridge system carries a higher average per-trade return threshold (6.00%) than a Grade D signal. Selecting only Grade D signals from a service whose aggregate performance was driven by Grade A signals will produce materially different outcomes. Always confirm which grades you will be following before subscribing.

The honest baseline question

Could you use the same capital, discipline, and time allocation that you would use following signals, to instead execute a systematic strategy you build yourself? For most buyers, the answer is no in the short term because strategy development takes time. Signal services that save that development time have a legitimate use case. The caveat: the time saving is only valuable if the signals you are buying are genuinely better than the base rate you would achieve following a simple systematic rule.
